I love starting a new year. I find the end of a year brings so much motivation and the opportunity for the next chapter.

We have many big plans for the start of this new year, but one of my personal goals is to consistently take Judge out with friends dogs that he can build relationships with.

The addition of resistance training has really helped as it gives him somewhere to channel his frustration and work through. Honestly it's been a game changer!

Here is Judge walking with his new friend Mila and my friend Jasmin from @karunacaninebehaviour - we rarely have time schedules that allow us to meet, but our new years intention is to take every opportunity we can to meet up with our dogs.

I'm determined that Judge will be a steady stooge dog one day!

Canine resistance training, including drag work, can greatly enhance your dog's physical and mental well-being, but it’s natural to have questions or concerns about safety. Let’s break it down:

She's too perfect, but also has a lot to say when she sees other dogs!

She struggles with frustration and lives in a highly dog populated area, so finds walks tricky.

With a lot of big feelings, we have plenty to work through, but she has such a lovely and committed family, so I'm sure we are going to smash this behaviour programme.

We have set some goals that we would like to achieve and will be working together on our hybrid in person/online behaviour programme to help Marly feel better around other dogs and be able to listen when they are around.

💫 CONDITIONED RELAXATION 💫

For those of you who know Arlo I swear this is really him 🤣

Teaching posture facilitated relaxation (a form of conditioned relaxation) has been quite a long journey for us. It won’t necessarily take all dogs as long as it’s taken Arlo but if you’ve got a fizzy, highly strung, easily aroused dog, then it’s so worth the effort. Or any dog for that matter, there are loads of benefits.

I took the concept from @grcdogsports and if I’d committed the time to it in the way I have done in recent months right from the beginning then we could have got here sooner. But I’ll be honest. It’s not exciting training. And it’s hard work to stick it out. You have to wait for some level of relaxation in every session you do - you can’t just throw the towel in after 30 mins if your dog is still flapping about like a fish.

I’ve been almost in tears after 50 minutes pleading (internally) for him to stop resisting and relax. But that 50 mins quickly became 30 mins. And then it was suddenly 10. And now it’s closer to 2 mins!

And here he is relaxing on his side with our amazing mobile vet @harriet_the_vet 🥹🥹🥹 - highly recommend Harriet if you suspect pain in your dog.

Although Arlo’s discomfort is now better managed through new meds, physically he is not improving, so he’s off for a CT scan this week. That will be trickier as it’ll be in a clinical setting but I’m hopeful he will find the examination a bit easier after all the work we’ve done 🙏🏽

💫 BEHAVIOUR PUZZLES 💫

Loved meeting Moomin and his owners yesterday! He is a really interesting but very sweet dog and we have seen great progress already. Really looking forward to putting the pieces of this puzzle together and helping Moomin reach his full potential!

He is in a constant state of high arousal, barely rests, and can only be placated if he’s given an item to hold. He’s great with people and dogs, no aggression or reactivity there. But his arousal manifests into what can only be described as full on meltdowns anytime he is near a door or a barrier. If he is really amped up he will lunge and bark at cars (he is not scared of cars) and will spend a lot of his walks grabbing anything he can find from the floor - a bottle, a stick, a glove, a conker - just to have something to chew or thrash to cope with his big feelings! He also never sniffed on walks or took food.

After our initial online consult we made some lifestyle changes and his owners have seen a noticeable improvement over the last 2 weeks. We had our first in person session yesterday and made some real headway with Moomin’s behaviour, including his extreme behaviour around doors, although plenty more work to do! Today they had their best walk yet 🥰

“Walk went well. Barked like a lunatic on the way out. But as soon as we left the main gate he was amazing. He only barked at a lorry on the way home because it startled him. Other than that he was the most relaxed I’ve seen him. Ate food. Zero pulling. He did pull/bark coming back home as we had to go through the front door as I couldn’t open the back gate. But walking outside main gate and road was perfect.

Just playing tug and he’s loving it. He keeps coming back to me to play with it which is amazing!!”

Will share more of Moomin’s case as it’s a very interesting one 👀

💫 REWARD EXPERIENCES 💫

Little Jet is a young staffy cross who was found straying. She had a brief spell in another home who returned her after a few weeks and now she’s landed on her feet with a lovely family!

She has no behaviour ‘issues’ but doesn’t have much basic training and is obsessed with other dogs. She would run to another dog a football field away (if she were allowed to!).

In our first session we spent some time working out what motivates her so we could work on her motivation before trying to teach her anything new. Turns out she rarely finishes her food at home, and she wouldn’t even take liver sausage from me (at home or outside). She would play with toys at home but not on walks.

In that session we got her playing outside on her walk, just by experimenting and playing differently - unsurprisingly she wanted a competitive game! Within a week she was recalling away from dogs and out of PLAY with dogs just with her start cue for toy play with her owner 🤩

In our second session we channelled this knowledge into our reward experience using food - built a bit of frustration with restraint and misses. got her chasing and fighting for the food in our hand, and chasing tossed food. She loved it and took food the whole walk, even walking next to us politely demanding more food by the end 🤣

What was the food you may ask? 👀

Now we’ve got motivation for some reinforcers that are within our control and we know what she finds rewarding, the ‘training’ can begin!

Some dogs have motivation in bucketloads and that gives us plenty of alternative behaviours to reinforce, others need a more creative approach. 💫 LOOSE LEAD OR HEEL? 💫

‘Does it matter that my dog is up ahead as long as the lead is loose?’ A question that comes up a lot!

Some dogs pick up the concept of walking with a loose lead fairly easily. There’s a few ways to teach this and help the dog to make the connection that they get to where they want to go if they walk ‘nicely’.

Some people suggest to use a slightly longer lead to eliminate your dog’s pulling. And for some dogs that may be all it takes to have them trotting along with no tension in the lead, a couple of metres up ahead of you.

But there are absolutely dogs who will be smashing into the end of a lead no matter how long it is. And there are dogs who actually enjoy pulling. Even if they don’t get to where they want to be by pulling, they are still reinforced by the very sensation of that opposition against the lead.

These dogs may benefit from having a clearer criteria than simply ‘walk where you like as long as the lead is loose’. E.g. the criteria might be that they need to maintain physical contact with your body, or their nose needs to be in line with your knee. It may even need to all be taught on one side of your body for extra clarity.

For reactive dogs, the ability to make decisions and move away from triggers is powerful - but if you find yourself in a situation where you need to do a narrow pass, there really isn’t anywhere safer for your dog to be than by your side, travelling *with* you. You don’t really want them 3 metres ahead of you approaching something head on!

Without this skill, you can be forced to take your dog off to the side, usually stationary, whilst you wait for the trigger to pass - this is usually much more difficult for the dog than keeping them moving.

Your dog doesn’t need to spend the whole walk glued to your side - using a release cue and/or different equipment cues can set your dog up for success.

Maybe you do have a dog that is totally non-reactive to their environment and happy to trot on a loose lead up ahead, stopping to sniff, waiting for you to catch up, and not dragging you into next week. If you do and that works for you that’s great!

I would assume that they don’t have the knowledge / skills / experience to help and don’t know how to tell you this. But I’d hope most trainers would be honest and refer you on to someone else.

OR it may be that they simply don’t have an aftercare package. So once your session time is up they see it as though their job is done!

If having a trainer available for follow up questions / coaching / support is important to you, make sure you ask what their aftercare is like after your session. Or if you’re signing up to a programme can you get guidance in between sessions?

Personally I would never go back to a ‘one and done’ approach, even for teaching a ‘simple’ behaviour (is there such a thing?!). Training isn’t linear, and in most cases the first session is about establishing motivation and communication and ensuring the dog’s lifestyle is appropriate - not the actual teaching of the behaviour itself.

If the dog isn’t physically and mentally fulfilled, if they aren’t motivated, if there are health issues or other factors affecting their behaviour, if they don’t accept food or toys outside…the list goes on…then you aren’t going to be able to teach them anything meaningful in a single session.

We do offer single sessions for some training - but only with a detailed action plan and a month of daily WhatsApp coaching and support 🫶🏼

Training Judge is my therapy. Where I find my flow state and can just be in the moment.

Judge used to be nicknamed "One Rep Judge" as he would completely disengage after one rep, particularly when learning something new. But I've fallen in love with the journey and use small spaces and small bites of time, and we work hard.

I couldn't be prouder of him.

💫 FAITH IN HANDLER 💫

This is Ted! Ted is a young Labrador who is learning that in between his owners legs is a safe space.

It’s obedience - but it’s obedience that puts up a forcefield around him. He will come to learn that this is a position of safety and that his owner won’t let people stick their hands in his face when he’s in this position.

Although the real magic will happen when Ted comes into this position without being asked - signalling to his owner that he is uncomfortable and asking her to take care of the situation.

This is how you use obedience to modify behaviour.

Don’t let your dog learn that barking and lunging is the only way to protect their space and provide relief - they learn very quickly that this option works incredibly well and this is how behaviour escalates.

Thankfully Ted’s owners noticed he was uncomfortable with certain interactions and so this won’t become an ongoing problem. He’s actually pretty socially curious, just a bit conflicted! He will probably become more social through this exercise when the pressure to directly interact is removed and he can observe and get healthy exposure from this position of safety.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the efforts of the owner getting this position on verbal cue alone, when the dog is distracted, with no food in sight and no hand signal - in TWO WEEKS! 🤩

We have had each other for one whole year!

My lovely best boy. So vulnerable, yet so resilient.

There's an edge to you that keeps me working hard, but I feel like we know each other inside out now.

You've grown so much in this last year, and there's been a growth for me too. You're making me a better trainer and giving me experiences that I only dreamed of.

Judge is my dream dog. I wasn't looking for him but he found me.

I can't help but think of his siblings who are still in kennels. It's a heartbreaking situation. I'm grateful I have had the opportunity to give Judgement a taste of real life. He may be an exempt dog, but he's more free than he's ever been.

I can't believe it's been a whole year. Here's to the next 10 and so many adventures! 🥰

💫 VET VISITS 💫

If you’re struggling with vet visits or any sort of formal handling / grooming…

Lady was uncomfortable and frantic at the vets and virtually impossible to examine. She is muzzle trained but she was still very unhappy!

Funny thing was, getting her more comfortable in these settings was actually relatively low on our list as Lady has some other behaviour struggles too which were higher priority - dog reactivity being the main one

This included reacting to dogs (or any animals) on the tv as well as outside the house and from inside the house

Enter 🥁…

BOX FEEDING 🤩

After successfully using it to work through Lady’s reactions to animals appearing on the TV, and to cut her nails at home, her owner took it to the vet for the first time today and had such an incredible result 🥹

What a clever girl 🥳 and don’t you just love how happy Lady’s owner is in this audio 🥲

And kudos to this vet too 🙌🏼
